Two companies, PK Data and Big Fish Publications, recently completed
rather extensive polling and market research about the pool and spa
industry and here are some interesting statistics you can throw
around at a really boring cocktail party...
Swimming Pool Facts:
State with the longest swimming season - Hawaii (12 months)
State with the shortest swimming season - Alaska (9 days)
States with the least number of pools - North Dakota (followed
by Wyoming, Maine, Montana, Vermont and Idaho)
States with the most number of pools - Florida, California,
Texas, Arizona, Georgia, New York
More people in the West use pool services than in the East (West
52%, South 49%, Midwest 43%, Northeast 37%)
Why don't you own a pool ? (Top 3 responses) Takes too long to
maintain (26%), Initial cost too high (21%), Cost to maintain
too high (20%)
Hot Tub Spa Facts:
Hot Tub Spa Owners tend to be the most educated with nearly 50%
having graduated college, the comes inground pool owners with 39%
having graduated college, followed by above ground pool owners at
26%.
Why did you buy a hot tub ? For relaxation and to relieve stress
(58%), To entertain and connect with family (27%), My doctor
recommended it (13%)
Why didn't you buy a hot tub ? Over 50% said it was because they did
not have the room for it (either inside or outside). Odd.
What do you call a Portable Spa ? 78% said they call it a "hot tub",
26% call it a "spa" and 6% call it a "Jacuzzi" or other terms.
How long do people "shop" for their spa ? 77% said more than 1 year,
13% said 3-12 months, 7% said 31-90 days and only 3% said less than
30 days.
How many brands did you consider before you bought a spa ? 84% said
3 or more and 16% said only 1 or 2 brands.
What was the most important consideration in buying a spa ? 34% said
the features and 31% said price.
How likely are shoppers to buy a spa in the next 12 months ? 38%
said they will buy, 27% said 50-50 chance, 19% will postpone until
2009, 15% said they were unlikely to buy at all.
How important were third party endorsements in your selection of a
hot tub brand ? 78% said they were either important or very
important.
How satisfied are you with the hot tub you selected ? 81%
indicated they were very satisfied, while only 5% were dissatisfied.
