They say if you “Build a better mousetrap, the world
will beat a path to your door”, but is
that the case if you “build a better towel”? Leslie Hanes says YES!
Leslie is the driving
force behind Discovery Trekking Outfitters (DTO) Ltd. This
innovative company has
struck gold with their Wick-er Warmup sports & travel towels,
showing that necessity
really is the Mother of Invention.
Leslie, an avid traveller, could not find a towel
that wouldn’t smell moldy after a day or
two, so experimented with moisture-management “wicking” fabrics.
These fabrics
draw moisture by capillary action and spread it to the outside of
the fabric, where it can
evaporate, so they dry approx. 3 times faster than cotton. After
researching extensively,
she came up with the idea of making towels from “wicking” fabric
containing Silver Ion,
which makes them permanently anti-microbial. Many hospitals use
Silver in bandaging,
and it has been used in clothing for astronauts. Silver is
oligodynamic, meaning that it has
antimicrobial activity at very low concentrations against a wide
range of bacteria, fungi
and viruses. Human odour originates from bacteria living on skin
surfaces. As these
bacteria cells live out their lives, they expel waste in the form of
an odorous gas. This
odour that becomes stronger over time from an influx of bacteria due
to reproduction.
High moisture areas (damp towels) are ideal breeding grounds for
odour emitting
bacteria. This is the reason that many wicking athletic shirts will
stink, even after
washing. The odor-fighting chemicals normally used in these shirts
wash out in a very
short time, causing odour to stay in the fabric. Not so with Silver!
Silver ions, as an anti-microbial, have been tested and researched
for years by the medical
industry and the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The
EPA
recognizes silver as one of the best anti-microbial agents, while
remaining harmless to
humans.
In the application of a towel, the technology very worked well, but
the challenge was
convincing sceptical buyers that such a lightweight fabric would
make a good towel. It
took a few well-known athletes to actually use the towels, and the
word spread like
wildfire. Soon swimming, camping & travel chat groups were looking
for suppliers.
Ideal for use where space is a premium, , the towels soon became
“hot” items for Sailing,
boating, RV’ing and camping. Major magazines wrote articles, and the
popularity
snowballed.
In the beginning, the towels were offered in only
one size, 34” x 58”, which was the
choice of competitive swimmers. It was large enough to double as a
cover-up.
The designers incorporated a sun protection factor into the fabric,
the towels offers
approx. 45 SPF. They were especially popular with teams, who
embroidered their logo.
Then came a smaller size for, campers & backpackers, as well as a
baby’s towel.
A smaller 13”x10” towel was made for marathon runners and golfers.
The towels are featured on the company website

THE INITIAL SUCCESS OF DISCOVERY TREKKING WAS DUE
TO THEIR “CUSTOM- FITTED” WIND & WATER REPELLENT OUTERWEAR.
SEVERAL NICHE PRODUCTS, INCLUDING A VERY HIGH-TECH MOISTURE-
WICKING TOWEL HAS BROUGHT “DTO” INTO THE INTERNATIONAL
SPOTLIGHT. “IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT I COULD PATENT A TYPE OF
TOWEL, WHICH IS SUCH A COMMON PRODUCT,” SAID
LESLIE HANES. “ HOWEVER, OURS IS A HUGE IMPROVEMENT”.
DTO ALSO MANUFACTURES SHEET COVERS AND PILLOW CASES FROM
THIS CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY FOR THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM NIGHT
SWEATS.
