This is my first season for a pool. What is a typical method for closing it down for the winter?

I figure lowering the water level just below the skimmer to empty out the pipes and pump housing to prevent freeze damage is obvious. I noticed a drain bib on the filter tank so Im assuming it drains the water without removing the filter media.

So what Im not sure of is what treatment the water needs to have before removing water from the pumping system.

Im curious to hear opinions prior to going the pool store where I have to pick up the cover for our model to compare as to what they might recommend for closing it up for the winter.

Im in northwest Georgia and wondering how much longer we can try to keep it going.

Just lowering the water is not enough. You need to blow the lines out with air. This can be done with a shop vac set to blow. Put the hose in the front of the pump and blow out the suction lines, plug the lines while the air is coming out the do the same through the hole in the back of the pump to do the returns. Remember to drain the water from the heater if you have one. Grease any hole that has threads that can rust in the heater
