Previous owners originally installed a DE filter using chlorine products. DE filter turned to concrete in bottom. Present owner replaced DE with a Hayward sand filter using non chlorine products. Sand turned to concrete again and we replace filter with new sand. 6 months later, sand turned to concrete again and will have to replace the filter. Backwash according to manufacturers instructions. Any suggestions as to why it is turning to concrete?

The most probable cause is very hard water or a strange combination of chemicals reacting together when entrained in the sand. It's also quite possible there is something in your area that blows into the pool and solidifies the sand. We have some problems with cliche roads in rural areas, it really can gum up a filter, be it sand or D.E. I would try Jack's Magic Blue or Purple Stuff. You should also use a good filter aid and filter cleaner on a VERY regular basis if your sand turned to concrete in only 6 months.

Typically sand filters use special filter sand that is .45 to .55 mm (#20 silica pool-grade sand) which has sharp edges that separate the particles allowing particles to be trapped. Initially large particles will be trapped and then as the sand loads up smaller particles will be trapped.

I haven't heard of both sand and DE turning into "concrete" that quickly. That sounds like a pretty unique problem. I agree with Buster that it could be something with the hardness of your water. I agree that you need to use filter cleaner regularly. You might also want to take a sample of your water to your local pool store and have them test it to make sure that you don't have some chemicals out of whack.
