So, for 5 years (when the pool was put in) the man/company that put it in told me to always make sure the water level never gets over a certain point, as water can get behind the liner and float it. For 5 years, I have drained excess water when it is raining, etc. as to not reach what I deemed the point of no return and an expensive mistake. For other reasons, we are having our liner replaced now. The guy came out this morning to measure and told me to cut the electricity off, let the pool go until they close it in about a week. It is raining hard here today, I asked if I needed to drain the pool, he said I would never find a swimming pool that overflows. This goes against everything I have ever been told. Is this the truth? Water escapes through the skimmer and goes into the ground if it gets to a certain level--without the owner draining it to waste?

So confused,

Hi,

It's always best to not let the pool water get above the liner track.I would not tell a customer of mine to let the pool go
(even though some of them don't drain). Pool water isn't good for the steel panels as it will speed up rusting and Polymer pools don't need any extra strain on them from ground water, also the line can float and wrinkle. In short Drain The Pool. Hope this helps

Cut the electricity and just use a submersible pump to pump out any excess water. That way you can winterize your system and still keep an eye on the water level.

I have an IG pool and I drop the water 20" below the top of the pool and I keep an eye on the level to not go over 18". I live in ND and it freezes up here and the mesh meyco cover I have is not made to strech below 18". Thats what I do and I never have a problem.

Good luck!

I definitely agree with ThomasEsarey you should never let the pool water excess on the liner track
