Do you not have a multiport valve on your filter? The dial a flo is usually used for water control on the pool(returns and main drain) What kind of filter do you have. Sand, DE or Cartridge?
Well I can say to you, draining a pool is extremely dangerous. I will just advise you to contact a local pool service company and pay them to come out and open your pool for the very first time. You can also get a pool guide by creative homeowner's that covers the basics.
But if you think you can do it alone, all i can do is to give you this information. http://www.snwa.com/html/cons_pools_drain.html I hope you'll learn something from there. Goodluck! =)
