test for cyanuric acid / stabilizer. you most likely need that.

here is a link:

Hi,

Also - What brand of Chlorine tabs are you using and are they "stabilized"

You want to make sure to buy stabilized tablets and also like Jeff says above get some stabilizer

What I do is this. I first of all buy a good test kit so you know where your numbers are at. They sell a great one on http://www.troublefreepool.com. There is also a pool school in there that has a table showing you what your CYA-Stabalizer vs Chlorine level should be at to maintain an adequate level to hold off algae. It is great.

Then depending on your stabalizer(CYA) level, you will know which kind of chlorine you should use. My suggestion is if you are low on stabalizer-CYA then you can either add some stabalizer or use Trichlor pucks. They add chlorine and CYA at the same time. Once your stabalizer level is at the recommended level, then you will want to switch to BLEACH or LIQUID CHLORINE. The only difference is the concentration of Chlorine in it. If you read the label you will notice on the bottle that it says Sodium Hypochlorite. This is unstablized chlorine. It is much cheaper and should be used once your level of stabalizer is high enough to fend off the sunlight.

The key is to understand your numbers and there is no way to do this without a good FAS-DPD test kit. I have one and have not had to shock in a few years. The key is to know how to manage the stablizer vs Chlorine content in your pool. Once you understand that, the daily add of bleach is minor. I put in about 40 oz of Bleach a day into my pool. It is crystal clear and the Stabalizer-CYA level is in the perfect range of 40-50 ppm. If you would like to see some pics of my pool then see the attached link.

Good Luck

Yes! definitely you can use a regular bleach for your pool. You can read these for further information http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_use_Clorox_bleach_to_chlorinate_a_pool.

clorox has a much lower level of chlorine than most regular liquid or granular chlorine shock products. it will end up costing you more with clorox to get the same ppm level of chlorine in your pool. it is an "old wives tale" that clorox is the "same" as pool shock....

This is not true. Just because Trichlor is 90% Available Chlorine while 6% bleach is 5.7% Available Chlorine just means that Trichlor is far more concentrated by weight, but bleach is very inexpensive per pound since it's mostly water. You also need to take into account the extra pH and TA adjustment products you need with Trichlor since it is very acidic. If you do all of that, then you find that bleach can be less expensive as shown in this post (the prices are older, but are still relative). I'm not even counting the algaecide or phosphate remover that is needed to prevent algae as the CYA level climbs. For every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) added by Trichlor, it also increases Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm. So even with a low 1 ppm FC per day chlorine usage, the CYA increases by over 100 ppm in 6 months unless there is water dilution.

Personally, I use 12.5% chlorinating liquid from my local pool store because it is reasonably priced and they reuse the bottles which is better than recycling. My 16,000 gallon pool shown here costs me just $17 per month in chemicals with a little less than 1 ppm FC per day chlorine usage (the pool has an opaque electric safety cover and is used 1-2 hours every day, more on weekends). The pH is fairly stable and I add a small amount of acid every 1-2 months. The pool is kept warm at 88F. I don't use algaecide, phosphate removers, clarifiers, or anything else though this year I did add 50 ppm Borates to the pool though this was optional (yes, they are a mild algacide and a pH buffer). My fill water has 300-500 ppb phosphates and I've had 2000-3000 ppb phosphates in the pool, yet my pool has remained algae free because I've maintained an appropriate FC/CYA ratio based on science known since at least 1974 (see this paper).

Clorox Regular bleach is 6% sodium hypochlorite and 5.7% Available Chlorine. Most pool store chlorinating liquid is 12.5% or 10%. It's only around twice as concentrated, but usually more than twice as expensive for the same volume (note that bleach is usually sold in 3/4 gallon containers while chlorinating liquid is usually sold in gallons, so one must adjust for that in comparing the two). 6% Clorox bleach at $1.25 for 96-ounces would be equivalent to $3.65 for one gallon of 12.5% chlorinating liquid. There are over 20,000 registered members at The PoolForum and over 10,000 at Trouble Free Pool many of whom use bleach and have comparison shopped for pricing (adjusting for strength and volume appropriately). People do, of course, add Cyanuric Acid (CYA) to their pools to start with and some use a mixture of Trichlor and bleach or chlorinating liquid if they have reasonable dilution of the water. The key is having a good test kit, getting to know your pool, and understanding the basics including maintaining an appropriate FC/CYA ratio.

Richard

Great job Richard. Too many miths from people stating that BBB(Bleach, Borax,Baking Soda) is not the right method to take care of your pool.

I switched from the pool chems 2 years ago and this past year my total cost came to $250 for 5 months of swimming. That included opening the pool and having to add some CYA to get the pool stabalized and going.

I would never look back and am a current member at Trouble Free Pool listed above. Its an awesome site with great people willing to help you at a moments notice.

They have treated me and my family well and I cant say enough great things about them.

I don't think household chlorine would be appropriate to use for pool water I think you should change the brand of chlorine you are using
