Sand Filter Systems:

Using sand as the filtering media provides some benefits to the pool owner. Sand filter systems are very easy to use and convenient to clean. A sand filter system is simply backwashed to clean away accumulated debris. After backwashing, a sand filter system is ready to filter pool water with a simple twist of the multi-port handle. Sand is an inexpensive filter media and it is very long lasting. Sand, if properly treated, only needs to be replaced once every 3-4 years.

Sand is relatively cheap, long lasting and very convenient to use. A properly maintained sand filter system provides good water quality and simple easy use.

For parts of the country with water restrictions and for pool owners who are looking for even better water quality, a cartridge filter system may be a better choice.

Cartridge Filter Systems:

Using a cartridge filter provides some benefits that a sand filter can't match. Because of the cartridge's construction, it will catch smaller particles than sand. Water quality is better with a cartridge filter system because of its ability to catch these smaller particles.

Cartridge filters are also recommended where water restrictions occur. Cartridge filters do not require backwashing, which can use hundreds of gallons of water. A cartridge filter is cleaned by removing the cartridge element, hosing it off and soaking it in filter cleaner overnight. When the cartridge is not too dirty, it can simply be rinsed off with a hose and re-installed without soaking in cleaner. Cartridges are relatively inexpensive (more expensive than sand) and need to be replaced every season or two depending on usage.
